Choosing a fabric base
Every Mellingfield print can be made on several fabrics, and the base changes how a pattern looks and how it wears. Use the guide below as a starting point. For commercial, or heavy-use projects, contact me and we’ll choose together.
Color can look slightly different from one fabric to another, so ordering a sample first is recommended.
Velvet
A soft, matte velvet with a plush hand and a hardworking construction. Prints take on a rich, slightly softened look, which suits darker palettes like Dark Romance.
Best for: accent chairs, ottomans, pillows, and statement pieces.
Good to know: the light rating is low, so keep it out of strong direct sun.

Linen-look Polyester Fabric
A linen-look fabric made from polyester, for when you want the natural texture without the maintenance. It’s sturdier than true linen, holds color well, and works for pieces that get daily use, like dining chairs, ottomans, and kids’ spaces. Ask for a sample to compare against natural linen.
Best for: dining chairs, everyday seating, drapery, pillows.
Good to know: very dark or saturated prints may transfer some color with heavy rubbing (dry rating 2.5 of 5), and the light rating is low.

Natural Linen
Real woven linen from Belgium, with the slight irregularity and soft hand you can only get from the natural fiber. It relaxes and creases with use, which is part of its character. My textured prints sit into the weave, which gives the color a soft, lived-in depth.
Best for: pillows, headboards, drapery, lightly used chairs.
Good to know: it shrinks more than the other fabrics (9–11% in length), so allow extra yardage and pre-treat. The Martindale rating suggests light seating use.

Recycled Canvas Fabric
A smooth, tightly woven canvas made with recycled fiber, with a subtle sheen. A practical choice for cushions and covered outdoor spaces.
Best for: cushions, porch pillows, curtains, throw pillows.
Good to know: color can vary slightly from run to run because of the recycled content. Performance ratings are available on request.
